Dr Nwaichi, a biochemist at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has been awarded the 2022 John Maddox Prize for engaging communities in conflict to research solutions to pollution in the oil fields of the Niger Delta. The judges commended her for putting forward evidence and trial methods for soil recovery, courageously advancing public discourse with sound science despite the personal risk.
The John Maddox Award recognises individuals who stand up for sound science and evidence in the public realm, despite facing hostility and personal risks. It is important that we acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts these individuals have made in order to advance public discussion on difficult topics.

In its oldest forms, mathematics studies trajectories in space, solves equations, calculates probabilities, generates statistics, and much, much more. Today, mathematics is being used to power the next giant leaps in science and technology.
Science Literacy Week 2022 is encouraging Canadians and those beyond to explore mathematics, its modern applications and how this ancient science is the origin of all the technology we know and use today.
